Would you like to improve your concentration? Do your thoughts jump around or glide? For me it all depends on my environment. If I am sick, or in the middle of high activity I'm much more prone to having a more sporadic trail of thoughts. You have probably had moments of the sort too, which is what makes that part in Disney's Up so humorous when we meet Doug the dog; "My master made me this collar so that I may talk…Squirrel! "
Oh yes, I've had plenty of those moments. So how do you reign them in when you really need to concentrate? As a writer, I often have to save my more serious writing for when the kids are sleeping so that I can really focus. As a College student the Husband also has to either wait until the kids are asleep or he has to leave and go to a study hall to do his work. We've done the College student era multiple times, and we've learned a few tricks to help improve one's concentration when it is needed most.
1. Avoid Distractions: turn off the TV, separate yourself from the family or "roommates" and give yourself some time to be on your own. The less distractions you have, the higher success you will have keeping your mind focused on the task at hand.
2. Soft calming music. Yes, I know I just said eliminate distractions, but it's been known when you need to focus, softly playing classical music that you enjoy helps stimulate the mind. The key is finding classical compositions that you enjoy. Sometimes you can get away with Music soundtracks without words, but only if you don't know the movie by heart, because then you start seeing the movie played out in your mind just by hearing the music. You also want it to be playing very softly, not at a normal volume.
3. Have a full belly. This is quite crucial, if you are hungry, there is no way your mind will be able to stay focused. Ensure that you have a full belly before you begin and keep healthy snacks on hand throughout the time period you need to focus. Also ensure you have a bottle of water to stay hydrated and quench any thirst that may arise.
Once these three minor options are in place, it will dramatically improve your concentration skills.

Soft calming music is a must!! I always love to put on David Nevue-his soothing and amazing piano music always helps me to de-stress and focus!
Avoid distractions….. Baaahahahahahaha
I have a toddler, and I work on the internet. An internet that is filled with shirtless pictures of Ryan Gosseling on Pinterest, sparkly craftiness, funny memes, and links that call to me – “Click Here”….
Avoiding distractions is like an Olympic event around here, lol…
hahahah! Meagan you make me laugh! Oh boy, it definitely is harder to avoid distractions with a toddler around…and also with Facebook, pinterest and for me, all those fun Giveaways on blogs! I have to close all my “tabs’ down when I’m writing a blog post, otherwise I get distracted way too easily.
Great ideas. I always have music on when I create my cards. I find tv and stuff hard to work around, it just is one big distraction to me. Sometimes when I need to be distracted, that is when the tv is used. I find that my elderly father in law is 86 and for his memory and concentration, he is learning to play a keyboard. My mom has decided to learn spanish using a system she picked up at the library. I think this is great for focus too.
