Growing up in Wyoming, we didn't have many issues with poisonous snakes or bugs of any kind. If we had, those would definitely be the top of my list of detests. But when it comes to merely animals that make me jumpy or nervous, I would have to say large dogs take the cake.
I grew up on a grain farm. We had cats like you wouldn't believe, usually a good 10 or so at any given time to hunt mice-thankfully they were all outside cats; but we did not have any dogs. I was accustomed to calm and lazy cats that basked in the sunlight, or cuddled on your leg for affection. Most dogs in our neighborhood were large dogs with lots of energy and were quite hyper. When you walk by, they would jump and bark and let me say, they were rarely on leashes!
Now when I say dogs, I merely mean the large dogs that reach about my knees or higher. Smaller dogs that are well behaved and don't yap excessively; well those can be rather cute sometimes. But you get a dog that would land me on my back end with one fell bound on my chest and I say, NO THANK YOU! Some of the breads I'm the most nervous around are Rottweiler, Doberman, German Shepherd, and Pitbulls! Oh goodness, I just see them and I'm walking on the other side of the road and start praying they are locked up.
Yes, you may call me a chicken when it comes to dogs like this. Yes, I know there are many out there that have been well trained to not be ferocious, yet for me; they still make me quite nervous to be around. And when the dogs run and jump on the fence and bark incessantly just because you happen to be in their site…well it doesn't do much to inspire confidence in their gentle nature.
We have a few dogs in our neighbors back yard that are like this. They are different breads but the behavior is the same and it terrifies me to let my baby girl out into my back yard on her own for fear she will stick her fingers through the fence and they will bite her! Yet it is hard for her to understand because she loves dogs so much, and our neighbors across the street has such a sweet LITTLE dog that she plays with all the time.
For me, big dogs are definitely a weak spot for me. I would just as well stick with our calm and lazy cat!
