Welcome to cold and flu season! With all the kids back in school and colds, flu and other horrible illnesses going around like Whooping cough and such, it has never been more important to instill good hand hygiene into our children and even for ourselves!

Practice good hand hygiene

Good hand hygiene consists more than just merely washing our hands every now and then. You need to ensure you are killing the germs on your hands so that you do not contract any illness, but also so that you do not spread it to others. You never know what germs are on surfaces around your home, school or work environment. Here are a few ways to ensure good hand Hygiene.

  • Wash hands for a minimum of 20 seconds, or approximately the time it takes to sing row row row your boat, or the ABC song.
  • Remember to scrub all surfaces, including the backs of your hands, wrists, between your fingers and under your fingernails.
  • Use Soap when washing hands. If you aren't a parent you may be surprised by how often you have to add the "Did you use soap?" when questioning your children about hand washing. Be sure they use the soap! Get a good lather and then rinse.
  • Use warm water

When to practice good Hand Hygiene

Good hand hygiene is not just merely washing your hands the correct way, but also knowing when it is important to wash your hands. We need to make sure we wash our hands at the correct times and also that our children are learning to wash their hands at the correct times as well. Wash your hands before:

  • you prepare any food or before you eat food
  • before you clean, treat or bandage any wounds, cuts, scrapes, or even caring for a sick person
  • before you put in or take out any contact lenses.

You also need to be sure to wash your hands after:

  • You prepare any food, especially if it contains meat,
  • using the restroom
  • changing a diaper
  • after play time
  • touching animals, toys or waste
  • blowing your nose, cough or sneeze
  • treating a wound, cut, scrape or caring for a sick person
  • handling garbage
  • After visiting crowded locations that could carry many germs
  • after any time you handle money.

No, proper hand hygiene will not guarantee you won't ever get sick, but it will dramatically cut down on the exposure you have to germs and could very well prevent you from being as sick as you could get, or how often you are sick. In short, it could prevent you from getting many illnesses that you would contract had you not practiced proper hand hygiene.

It is also very important that you practice proper hand hygiene when you are sick. This will help keep additional germs from entering your body and allow your body time to combat the illness it is fighting. It also helps lower the risk others have of contracting the illness from you.

Practicing good Hand Hygiene with hand sanitizer.

According to the Mayo Clinic a great way to ensure proper hand hygiene when water is not present is with a hand sanitizer. You want to ensure it contains at least 60% alcohol.

  • Apply enough of the product to the palm of your hand to wet your hands completely.
  • Rub your hands together, covering all surfaces, until your hands are dry.

Now I love the idea behind a hand sanitizer, because I'm not always around water all day long to wash my hands after every single thing I do or touch. A hand sanitizer definitely makes it easier to practice good hand hygiene. But what I often run into with regular hand sanitizers is that they often over dry my hands and I feel as though my skin will crack at any moment. When dealing with Eczema; this is very crucial that my hands don't reach this point. My hands also reach this point with all the hand washing that is required for proper hand hygiene as well.

I just recently discovered a great hand sanitizer that has really helped to combat the issue of over drying hands, yet still allows for proper hand hygiene! And would you believe it's from the popular Kleenex brand?

I had no idea that Kleenex brand even produced a hand sanitizer. We are big Kleenex fans in our home, as those are the only tissues we use. So knowing how reliable the brand is, I knew the hand sanitizer had to be worth a try. I am happy to report I was not disappointed.

The Kleenex brand hand sanitizer contains not only the required amount of ethyl alcohol to ensure proper hand hygiene, but it also contains moisturizing Aloe and Vitamin E which helps to combat that dry feeling after cleaning one's hands.

The hand sanitizer is a near clear creamy liquid that once dispensed into hands is very easy to rub in. It doesn't take long at all for the sanitizer to dry and for you to be on your way with clean hands.

At first it has a very light Aloe smell and a very potent alcohol smell. But after the sanitizer has dried your hands a left with a very pleasant floral scent as though you just applied your favorite lotion. I quite enjoy the after scent.

The other amazing thing I have really fallen in love with is that after the sanitizer has dried my hands actually feel as though I just applied lotion to them. They are very soft, smooth and don't feel dry at all. All this from just cleaning my hands! I've never experienced this with any other hand sanitizer I've ever used. Like I mentioned earlier, all other hand sanitizers dry out my hands, yet this one has left my hands feeling as though they have just been given a luxury treatment. Did I mention that I love the Kleenex brand? This is just one more reason to add to the long list of why I love them.

Hand Hygiene and Children

We all know little people need constant supervision when it comes to proper hand hygiene. They need to be taught how to wash their hands properly. They need to be asked frequently if they actually washed their hands as well. But unless you are with them 24/7 you have no way of knowing if their hand washing was done correctly or if they even did it at all.

That's another reason why I love having a quality hand sanitizer around. I can ensure that my children's hands are clean, even when I can't be around for them to wash their hands as often as they should. We use the Kleenex Moisturizing instant hand sanitizer to help ensure that their hands are free from germs. Just one little pump, and rubbing their hands until it is dry and I know my kids are safe from germs.

They have really increased the need for hand sanitizer in the classrooms as well. The teachers always ask for hand sanitizer to be donated to the classrooms to help combat germs. They use it quite frequently, so I'm rather thankful for efficient teachers who know the importance of good hand hygiene. To help their efforts I'm donating extra Kleenex hand sanitizer to each of my children's classrooms. It will help out the classroom, but also give me peace of mind that my children have a quality hand sanitizer that will kill the germs and but won't over dry their sensitive skin.

I am constantly telling my family to wash their hands. I know they don’t always listen but eventually it will sink in! Thanks for the great article.

my son just LOVES sanitizer – another one of those horrible habits he learned from public school. sigh.
the antibiotic-resistant superbug things really concern me – i think sanitizer should be used in hospitals and nursing homes or in emergencies when there’s no possible way to wash your hands… but now it’s so routine for everyone and things are getting out of control.
i buy regular soap (not anti-bacterial soap) and i do my best to make sure we use as little as possible if it’s inevitable. and, wouldn’t you know it, our family hardly ever gets sick. a cold maybe twice a year, if that. so yeah, we don’t really feel the need for it :-)
glad it works so well for you, though!

Love, love, love your new hair color! You are such a beauty!

Keeping kids hand sanitary has been the plague of my life. With 6 boys, 5 girls and living in the wild, wild, west, it was near to impossible. Wish hand sanitizers had been invented way back in my day.

We use hand sanitizer a lot. I like the fact that this one is moisturizing, though. Sometimes they feel like they dry your hands out. Great tips, too! ‘Tis the season to ward off those germs!

Thanks for the tips, but I’m not really an advocate for hand sanitizer. I feel like we are just creating more problems by creating super bugs that are resistant. Good old soap and water for me!

I am going to have to give this a try! I hate going to the grocery store and using the sanitary wipes because of all the germs that are their by the wipe container so I usually bring my own but have a very drying hand sanitizer that I am currently using for before and after!

I like the idea of a hand sanitizer from Kleenex. I know they make good tissue–the best when you have a cold–so this should be a good product, too.

Also, another good hygiene tip: When using a public restroom, use a paper towel to open the door when you leave. It is surprising how many people do NOT wash their hands after using the restroom. Major gross out to me.
