This post brought to you by LifeLock Twitter. All opinions are 100% mine.

About two months ago the husband and I got a phone call from our bank informing us of some questionable purchases on our credit card. After reviewing the purchases it was confirmed that yes, indeed our credit card had been compromised and our identity was being misused in Texas. Thankfully our bank caught the situation before any major harm could be done. The charges were less than $200 and were refunded to our card with no fees. But could you imagine what would have happened had we not had identity protection? For those that need assistance in protecting your identity, Lifelock offers identity protection for our virtual world.

LifeLock: Identity Fraud in a Virtual World

Had our bank not caught the identity theft right away, we could have been in a world of hurt. We would have been held accountable for paying off the money someone unauthorized had charged to our account. And that's just the easy part! What if they would have stolen more than just our credit card information? Aside from the hassle of getting your identity back into security; just imagine the potential breach of so much personal and sensitive information!

Now that world has gone online; from connecting with friends to banking, so much of “you” is online. Are you certain you’re secure?  LifeLock is today’s leader in the world of identity theft protection and information. LifeLock provides its customers with top of the line identity theft protection through a suite of services backed by state-of-the-art technology. In addition, LifeLock provides information on all aspects of identity theft and threats.

I do a lot of my work online. I'm online all the time with my work and communicating with my family, and shopping. If someone could hack into any one of my social media sites, I'd be in a world of hurt. I've had friends and family have their emails hacked, Facebook accounts hacked, and more! It's not a fun endeavor to recover your accounts and repair the damage.

One of the things you can do is make sure you have strong passwords. How hack-friendly is your password? In the Military they always had us change our passwords often, and they would always contains Capitol letters, numbers and symbols. It makes hacking into your account that much harder.

Dangers of Identity Theft and How Lifelock can help.

Protecting your identity isn't just something big corporations have to do any longer. It is something everyone should take an interest in. Here are just a few stats to consider as to why identity protection is so important:

• Households earning $100k + per year have the highest identity fraud rate at 7.4%
• The average cost per person of having identities stolen is $1,513
• 11.6 million adults were victims of identity fraud in 2011 and a total of $18 billion was lost.

Alarming stats for social media/ smartphone users that have experience identity fraud:
• 6.6% of victims are smartphone owners
• 6.8% of victims are social media users who click on the applications
• 8.2% of victims are social media users who have “checked in” using their smartphone GPS
• 10.1% of victims are LinkedIn users

Do you know how fast a professional hacker can breach your password security?
• If you have 6 characters in your password with no symbol, it only takes a professional .000224 seconds
• If you have 10 characters and one symbol in your password, it takes up to 20 days for a professional to break in.
• What would this mean to your online banking, personal information and overall privacy?

Are you alarmed by the stats listed? I know I'm alarmed. Do you feel protected against identity theft?

LifeLock offers monitoring of your credit accounts, your credit score, checking and savings accounts monitoring, Surveillance of unregulated global networks and file-sharing sites, internet monitoring, address monitoring, and even protection against losing your wallet! They cover all the bases to ensure that your identity is protected, and when it is compromised they have all the means at their disposal to get it back. Plus they offer a $1 Million total service guarantee.

This is a great idea! My sister had her identity stolen a few years back. People are doing this to kids and it’s quite a process to repair. Thanks for sharing!

I used to work at a bank and was shocked by how many ordinary people got their identity stolen everyday! It makes me want to protect myself even more, and lifelock looks like a great way to do so!

My mom has had it for several years (and it gives us kids peace of mind), but I just got it myself a couple months ago. I LOVE it so far!

We’ve had a breach in our cc before too… but the bank was so fast about catching it that they called both hubby and I right away!

My hubby is always making sure our passwords are secure. He uses 14 characters, complex, no real words and changes them at least every 90 days.

We actually used Lifelock for a while, until they had their security breach. It’s good to know they’re back offering protection.
