We live in a society where we rely on computers all the time! Almost every household owns at least one if not more. We store our files, documents, photos and more on them. So what happens when you are out of your home but  you need access to a file you have on your computer at home? Have you had that happen? I have, more than once! Or maybe your child goes off to school forgetting their research paper they worked so hard on? Or maybe you run into a great friend you haven't seen in a long time in the grocery store and you pull up your phone to show her pictures of how much the kids have grown, only to remember that those photos are on the computer at home. Wouldn't it be nice to access your home computer files from anywhere not just at home? With the My-Ditto network attached storage device you can!

I don't speak Geek, What is a My-Ditto Network Attached storage device?

The My-Ditto is a network attached storage device. You can think of it as an external hard drive (the part of the computer that stores all your files, photos, music, videos, etc) that you can access through your  network. This means you can access the files on the My-Ditto without it having to be plugged into your specific device or computer. It's a lot like your own personal cloud or Dropbox but instead of everything being stored on the internet, it is stored on an actual device in your home. It also allows you a lot more storage space without any monthly fees.

The great thing about the My-Ditto is that it stands alone and does not need a computer to operate. As long as it is plugged into your router (for those that don't know what a router is, it is that internet box thingy that lets you have access to your internet) then you can access, store, backup and share data from anywhere and on any device with the my-Ditto storage solution.

My-Ditto network attached storage offers freedom to access your files from anywhere.

In our own home we have 2 desktop computers, a laptop, an iPad and a Nexus. Mind you our computers aren't the newest and greatest, the newest one being a good 2 years old. But they still work. But the problem is, with a Husband being a full time student, and me being a blogger we find that we are trading off computers with each other often. Why? Well because one computer is hooked to the scanner. The laptop is portable and then our second desktop computer is hooked to the TV for entertainment but it is also our backup computer. What has happened is that our files have started to be scattered across our devices. So I find I'm working on a project and I need a photo. Oh I have one! Except it's on the Husband's computer. Or he's working on a homework assignment and he needs his project that is on my laptop. This constant trading of computers back and forth is slowing us both down and getting confusing. That's why we needed a network attached storage device that would allow us to store all our files in one central location which would allow us to access it from any of our computers.

I originally thought we should just get a large external hard drive to store everything on, but the problem is that with an external hard drive it has to be plugged into the computer you want to access the files from. So if I was using the hard drive to access files, the Husband couldn't access his files at the same time. Then we considered Dropbox, which is a great online program, but you are really limited on how much you can store. And that's when I came across the My-Ditto.

My-ditto Network attached storage system

I was a little  nervous when the My-Ditto arrived because although I love my tech gadgets, I'm not the biggest fan of setting them up and installing files. I prefer the Husband to do that, but since he's gone for his internship I had to muster up my courage and do it myself. Wow, you wouldn't believe just how simple it was! Even those without a lot of gadget experience can set this up!

First thing you do is connect the power supply chord and plug it in.

Then you plug in the Ethernet cable into the My-Ditto and the other end into your router. Very easy.

Then you simply turn the My-Ditto on. You are now finished!

See, I told you it was super easy! It usually just takes a minute or two for the device to load and create the connections with the router, but once you see the top 3 blue lights and the hcd1 light lit up, you are ready to start using it.

In order to start using the My-Ditto, you then use one of the "key's" that come with the device. It comes with two keys but you can purchase extra keys that can easily be programmed to work with your specific nas device depending on how many people you want to have access to your device. This comes in very handy when you have a teenage or college aged child that needs to have access to their school projects at home, at school and even on the go. That way Mom and Dad can still have their own access to the My-Ditto but so can the child.

Simply plus the key into the USB port of your computer and click to open the program file.

When you access the My-Ditto system for the very first time, you will be prompted to create a user profile where you supply a username, email address and password. After the first time, all you need to do is plug in the key and put in your password. The key remembers the rest.

Once you are connected then you will be able to see all the files on your computer and you can begin the transferring process of moving files from your computer to the My-Ditto. You can choose to put your files into a public folder, a shared folder or your own private folder that only you can access. Yes, that private folder is even private from anyone else that has a key to your My-Ditto. As long as they aren't using your key they can't see your private folder.

You can store files, or create an entire backup of your computer. In my use I did discover that the transfer process takes differing times if your computer is on a wireless or wired network. Transferring all of my blog photos and videos from my laptop took quite a while because it was going through a wireless network. But when I got onto the Husband's computer I was able to transfer a lot of music files rather quickly as his computer is on a wired network with the router.

Benefits of the My-Ditto Network Attached Storage device

There are many benefits of using the My-Ditto networked attached storage device. Some of which are:

  • Back up your data. You can easily back up your data on your computer and as you make changes, it will make the updates as well.
  • Share your files. With all data on the My-Ditto then any one you grant permission to can access the files from any location. Husband, child, and even Grandma 3 states away can get access to those family photos from the last family vacation you took.
  • Multimedia.  Using the my–Ditto USB key, you can copy all of your media to the my–Ditto and remotely access it from anywhere. Plus you can stream files directly to your TVs, Media Adapters, Digital Picture frames and Gaming Consoles.
  • Easy to plug n' play. Very easy set up, no configuration at all. Simply connect the two simple wires, turn on and it is ready to use a minute later!
  • My–Ditto assures safe and secure network storage through:
    • Two–factor authentication–personalized USB keys and password protection.
    • RAID 1 mirroring storage using two hard drives on the server.
    • AES 256–Bit Encryption, ensuring that you and only you can see what is being transferred.

I love how easy it is to access our files just by inserting a small little key into my computer. I don't have to lug around a big external hard drive. I don't have to find an extra power outlet for the external hard drive. I love that both the Husband and I can access the My-Ditto at the same time!

I also love that you can even download an app onto your iPad, iPod, iPhone, Google Nexus, or android smartphone and access all your files, music, videos all from  your mobile devices! What is amazing is that even though the Husband is 3 hours away at his internship, with his app on his iPad he is able to access all our music, videos and all his work files whenever he needs them. I can upload photos and videos to Facebook or email them right from my Nexus! It gives me so much more freedom to be mobile and not tied down to my laptop. The only downside is that sometimes the app can be a little temperamental, but that seems to be the case with most apps. And usually it doesn't last long before it begins to work again.

I absolutely love our My-Ditto! It has made our digital lives so much easier the last few weeks. I never have to hunt for my files, as they are all at my finger tips no matter where I am. The 1TB model is at present the perfect size for our family as we've been able to upload quite a lot of data to the My-Ditto and we still have lots of room left to continue to collect.

It's like having our own personal Cloud, without a monthly fee that we can share with our family or keep completely private. I love My-Ditto.

I’m surprised my son hasn’t told me about this yet. He was probably about to, lol! We’re using Dropbox for now, but this is certainly something to keep in mind. I would love to have better access to the PC photos on my laptop!

My hubby and I talked this weekend about how nervous we are about the whole “cloud thing.” Sending our personal info out there into the internet cloudspace just seems dangerous. My Ditto alleviates my concerns. How awesome! Thanks for the great review — easy to understand.

Thanks for the review. I do speak geek and I had never heard of it. That’s an excellent price for a terabyte.

It’s interesting and could prove to be oh so helpful at times, especially on vacation when you really don’t want to lug things around, but you know you’re going to have to access items at some point.

This was a very informative post. Thank you!

I have a 4T external drive but it is hooked to the internet (it is more of a cloud/backup external drive)…I like the idea of Ditto, even though 1T is not enough space (I love taking photographs…I have around 150GB in photos) but Ditto is well worth the try! Thanks for the review, very helpful!

This is great! I definitely could use this, as we have 3 computers, 2 smart phones, an iPod touch and a kindle fire and I like to use the same files on all of them.

You sound like us! lol. So many devices with all your data spread across all of them! It’s VERY nice to have all that data centralized and accessible from all the devices.

I just bought an external hard drive a couple months ago (but failed at using it regularly before my hard drive in my laptop crashed!), but I wish I had known about this. This looks so much more user friendly and convenient than a standard external HD!

Oh NO! I’m so sorry about your laptop crashing. I think I would cry for weeks!
Yes, the my-ditto has been VERY easy to use and very user friendly. I don’t have to lug a big hard drive from device to device to access or back up files. It’s been very handy.

Wow! 1T worth of storage! That’s fabulous! We use dropbox as a family, but just for pics… a file sharing/storage system is something that wee need to invest in. Will definitely be checking this out!

Yeah, that 1TB is really awesome! I’ve backed up my entire laptop and we still haven’t even reached the 1/4th mark! I’m loving it! I’m now working on backing up our entertainment computer and then the Husband’s computer.
